"Ten Digits"
I found this project in the archives on Rhizome. I was drawn to this project because of the image of the outline of the hands. It is visually appealing the way it contrasts the surface of the electronic paper.
Cody Trepte is the artist of this (2004 – 2006) digital piece. He is attempting to make a statement about the “pre-digital era”, and in this time the term ‘digits’ still meant ‘fingers’. He is, like other artists, exploring the double entendre of the high tech handmade. I find this metaphor in his work interesting and alluring. The term “handmade” is captured in the line drawing of actual hand figures. Cody Trepte, the New York based artist has produced pieces that explore overlaps between binary and tactile representational systems, as well as cause us to think about the concept of “the hand of the artist”. His Binary Cross Stitch series is a work entitled 'Alan Turing once knit himself a pair of gloves. This work is a reminder of the man behind the machine--a man whose private life Trepte has explored in previous exhibitions. Through his multiple attempts of understanding why technology has become so depersonalized, Trepte connects humans and robots through his artworks and the messages behind them. Cody Trepte has described his work as a process of unraveling the 'translation of data from a physical or analog state to an electronic state.
Cody Trepte’s work is an interesting take on the introduction of technology into art. His take on ways to personalize technologies affect on the art piece being created is I feel fits the time the project was shown. Since the introduction of this project almost 4 years ago, technology has interjected itself even deeper into the art world. I personally feel that Tripte would have an even more developed addition to this project if he revisited it using the newer technologies available today.
I too have also found art created through technology depersonalized since you are separated from the work by a screen. As an artist who concentrates in painting and physically manipulating the medium, a simple mouse click seems almost simplistic. Though complex art can be created through photoshop, I still continue to gravitate towards paintings.
